Getting ready for family photos? This post shows how to build excitement with your kids, set them up for comfort and fun (snacks, music, zero screens), and let them take the lead—so the whole experience is joyful and natural.

When it comes to beautiful family photos, happy kids make all the difference—and it starts with the right kind of prep. The day before your in-home session is the perfect time to set the tone. This post walks you through small, thoughtful actions that help your children feel comfortable, confident, and ready to shine in front of the camera (without any pressure).

Build Excitement for the Session

Start talking to your kids about the session like it’s a special playdate. Tell them something like,

“Tomorrow, Miss Karen is coming to take our pictures! We’re going to read our favorite books, play games, and show her our best dance moves.”

Setting these playful expectations helps kids feel curious and excited rather than nervous or confused. The more you speak about the session with positive energy, the more likely they are to jump right in when the time comes.

Let the Kids Lead

One of the best parts about in-home photo sessions is that they’re totally child-led. If your little one wants to cuddle on the couch, we’ll capture that. If they want to take a snack break or build a tower of blocks, we’ll go with it.

There’s no rush. Some of the most memorable images come from these unscripted, everyday moments. Just let your kids be themselves. I'll follow their lead.

Sometimes kids just need a minute to quietly play.

Gentle Reminders for Parents

There are only two things I ask of parents during a session:

  1. Stay relaxed and warm. Children often look to you for cues. If emotions shift, that’s perfectly normal. A calm presence and an encouraging smile help them settle naturally and allow us to capture those sweet in-between moments.
  2. Allow space for personality. Unless someone is about to get hurt, try to resist correcting or directing. A little silliness or unpredictable often leads to the most heartwarming images.

Keeping a calm, easygoing energy helps your kids feel safe to be themselves, and that’s when the special moments happen.

Support Their Comfort and Focus

A few practical steps can make a big difference in helping kids feel calm, fed, and focused before the session:

  • Play music. Something upbeat or familiar can lighten the mood and help everyone relax.

  • Eat beforehand. Hungry kids = cranky kids. A quick, non-messy snack before the session keeps energy up.

  • Turn off screens. Shut off electronics at least 15 minutes before we begin. This helps them transition away from screens and into real-time connection.

  • Keep it positive. Your mood sets the tone. Talk about how fun the session will be, crack a few jokes, and focus on fun, not perfection.

Let Them Help

You can gently involve your children in the preparation to build anticipation. Let them choose a favorite book, gather art supplies, or help lay out ingredients if you plan to bake during the session.
