#1 Sessions take place in the comfort of your own home

Perhaps the biggest reason families love in-home sessions is that we tend to feel most comfortable and relaxed in the familiarity of our own home. It makes sense, right? We spend a lot of time at home. And we have everything we need at home. This comfort transfers really well into photography. The more comfortable we are, the more natural and authentic our expressions and behaviors are, which means we'll end up with photos that we love!

For families with newborns or toddlers, in-home sessions are particularly advantageous. Young children feel more secure and at ease in familiar surroundings, which means they are going to cooperate more during the session. Plus you'll have access to everything you need to keep little ones happy: snacks, drinks, diapers, a close and clean bathroom, toys, books, and areas to rest or play.

Plus there's no worrying that anything has been forgotten at home (or left behind at some location). No lugging around a diaper bag, no searching for a private place to change clothes or the baby's diaper, no wondering where to park or how far you'll have to walk from the car to the session location, and no worrying about the weather. All of this stress is eliminated when you choose an in-home lifestyle photography session.

#2 Your home offers limitless storytelling opportunities

Home environments often lead to more spontaneous and candid moments that really capture the personality of your family. Consider the moments that you want to be a part of and have captured: your family snuggling together on the couch reading your toddler's favorite book; rocking your baby to sleep in the nursery; your toddler playing with the dog; daddy and daughter dancing in the middle of the front room.

Capturing your family engaged in everyday activities, whether it's cooking together, playing games, or reading, can result in genuine and heartwarming photographs. These cherished moments become memories that are amplified by the comfort and familiarity of your own home that you and your children will treasure!

#3 Your in-home session feels relaxed because timing isn’t an issue

The vast majority of outdoor photography sessions take place during golden hour - that period right before sunrise or sunset, as midday sun results in harsh shadows. For most families with young children, getting ready and out the door before sunrise is entirely too early and impractical. And frankly, most adults don't want to be up and out the door at 5am either! And depending on the time of year, the evening golden hour takes place well after young children usually go to bed.

In-home sessions offer greater flexibility in terms of timing. Sessions are often scheduled midmorning and around your children's nap time, which means you can choose a time that works best for you and the needs of your children. This flexibility contributes to a more relaxed and enjoyable photo session.

#4 Weather isn’t an issue for in-home photography

Okay, this may not seem like a big deal in Southern California, right? We have beautiful weather. Except on those days when we don't. The last couple of years we've had more cold rainy weather during our winter than we're used to. And we typically have a few weeks worth of hot Santa Ana weather that can be taxing on everyone, but little ones and older ones especially.

So good news: In-home photography is not weather-dependent! Unlike outdoor sessions, we don't have to worry about whether or not it's too hot, too cold, too cloudy, too windy, or too rainy for our session. You literally control the comfort of the session via your home thermostat!

This is great news for families with newborns, as little ones have a harder time regulating their body temperature, which means they will often feel hotter or colder much faster than adults. The same holds true for families who include older ones in multigenerational sessions or those who have health concerns. This makes an in-home session a practical option for capturing family moments regardless of the weather conditions outside.

#5 Home is where your memories are made

Photographs taken at home capture not only the people but also the surroundings that hold significance. The background of your home becomes a part of the memory, adding context and depth to the images. When you see the image of your family sitting on the porch, you also see your first home together; when you see the image of your son playing with toy cars, you also remember how he took the little blue one everywhere he went; when you see the image of your family sitting at the kitchen table, you also recall the long held family tradition of Sunday dinner with the grandparents.

The images captured within your home capture not only that precise moment, but all of the moments woven into the personal history of your home and all the memories that are yet to be created. The emotional significance of these spaces contributes to the overall feeling that "home is where the heart is," which makes images from an in-home lifestyle session that much more meaningful for you and your family.

This is where an in-home session is simply the best option for capturing your family. In-home sessions capture the energy of your toddler, the interactions between siblings, and the connection between mom and dad in a way that posed studio sessions never can. In-home sessions show the personality of each individual and the home that you've worked hard to create. And most importantly, in-home sessions show where your memories are made!

Bonus Reason: In-home sessions allow you to include your pets

Including well-behaved pets in family photos captures the real, everyday moments that truly reflect your family. Whether it's a dog playing with the children or a cat lounging in a sunlit spot, these images become cherished memories.

And just like people, pets have their own quirky behaviors and personalities. Capturing these traits in photographs adds character and charm to the images, making them more memorable and engaging. Their spontaneous actions, such as running, playing, or cuddling, can infuse a sense of liveliness and joy into the photographs.
